The Boston Bruins now have 10 defensemen vying for roster spots, with Charlie McAvoy’s six-game suspension adding urgency to potential trades. The logjam—exacerbated by free agency signings and a failed Darnell Nurse deal—could force moves before the season starts in October.
The core of Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, Nikita Zadorov, and the newly acquired Will Borgen is set. But after that, the picture is murky. Connor Clifton and Jordan Harris joined in free agency, while the team missed out on Nurse, John Carlson, and Jacob Trouba in trade talks. A no-trade clause reportedly derailed the Nurse deal, with Zadorov as the prime suspect.
The Bruins have $5.39 million in cap space after free agency, enough for flexibility but not a major in-season upgrade. Don Sweeney stressed maintaining options over hasty moves. “We’re a destination team,” he said, “but not everybody’s identified us yet.” With McAvoy out for six games, the window for trades could open sooner than expected.
Injuries, early-season performance, and cap relief could push the Bruins to move a D-man. Sweeney hinted at conversations already underway. “It’s an area we told you we’d address,” he said in July. The team’s 45-27 record, fifth in the East, suggests they’re not desperate—but efficiency on the back end remains a concern.
The six-game suspension for McAvoy (starting October) adds pressure. If the team clears cap space, they’ll likely target depth or future assets. For now, the focus is on managing the roster while keeping flexibility for the playoffs.
